Owning a Porsche in a Family with Small Children

Children and Porsche
February 2016. The first Porsche our family could all ride in together arrived at our home: a Panamera Edition (970 model).
At that time, our eldest daughter was just 2 years old. When we only had one child, it wasn’t too bad, but as our second daughter and then our son were born and grew up, the issue of dirt inside the car gradually became unavoidable.
After returning from the park or picking them up from kindergarten on days they had been to the park, the floor mats would instantly be covered in sand. Besides that, gravel-like debris and large leaves that made us wonder, “Where on earth did this come from…?” would also be brought in by the kids.
On top of that, there were spills of juice and snacks… When the Panamera Turbo (971 model) arrived at our home, less than a month after delivery, our eldest daughter got car sick and vomited inside the car.
More recently, on the way back from a home center after a goldfish scooping game, our second daughter somehow dropped the plastic bag with the goldfish in the back seat of the Taycan, soaking the rear seats. We hurriedly rescued the goldfish, moved them to our eldest daughter’s plastic bag, and wiped the seats with towels, but I couldn’t help but think, “Please, give me a break…”.
I Don’t Want to Give Up Porsche.
Considering these situations, some might think, “Maybe it’s better not to push yourself to drive a Porsche while your kids are small?” But for me, buying a Porsche with my own money and being able to drive my beloved car almost every day is a vital motivation in my life. (In fact, I feel my work luck has improved since I got my Porsche.)
Also, the time I spend driving my Porsche alone is precious ‘me time’ away from raising three kids, so Porsche is an indispensable part of my current lifestyle.
When raising children, there are so many moments when you have to give up on yourself. I’ve become quite good at letting things go.
When the kids were small, there were long stretches when I couldn’t even go to the hairdresser (I didn’t even feel like going until a few years ago), and it was common for plans I was looking forward to be canceled because a child was unwell.
Even when I try to watch YouTube quietly at night, the kids call out “Mama, Mama” every few minutes, and even when I’m concentrating on work or in meetings, the kids often break my focus.
This lifestyle has been going on for about 10 years now, so I’m somewhat used to it, but inevitably, I put myself last. If I were to give up my beloved Porsche too, I feel like I would lose my emotional anchor.
It’s not just logic—I might be a bit stubborn about it—but weighing all the factors, I still want to keep driving my Porsche, no matter how small the kids are.
Ways to Enjoy Porsche with Kids
That said, over these 10 years, I’ve gradually come up with some countermeasures.
When we had the Cayenne, we used rubber floor mats that could be easily washed with water, and always put seat covers where the child and baby seats were placed to prevent damage (like this↓).
Since my son kept grabbing the center panel, I put a protective film on it…
I mentioned earlier the goldfish and water spilled on the Taycan’s back seat, but we have a full seat cover on the Taycan’s rear seats (costing about 3,000 yen on Amazon), so we managed to get through it.
If we hadn’t had the seat cover, it would have been much worse.
Well, despite all this, being able to enjoy Porsche with the whole family will become a great memory later on. Our annual long drive to Fuji Speedway has become a family tradition, and the kids seem to enjoy it too.
In a year or two, our eldest daughter will probably stop coming along, so I guess this is the time we can all enjoy it together.
Recently, when I’m wiping the passenger seat or cleaning up messes, the kids have started saying, “Should we wipe the back too?” and help with the cleaning.
Of course, the car stays cleaner with just adults, but enjoying car life with kids is a special experience in its own way.
Our youngest son is now 4 years old, and maybe in about five years the car interior will be less prone to getting dirty. On the other hand, when he starts club activities, it might get messier again (laughs). But that too will become a unique memory of our family’s Porsche life.
