I asked a Porsche Japan product manager directly about the new 911 (992 model).

The other day at the Porsche Sportscar Together Day at Fuji Speedway, I had the opportunity to meet for the first time with Alex, the product manager of Porsche Japan. My wife has met him several times, but I had never met him before, and I was eager to meet and talk with him.
We were able to see the actual car and hear a firsthand explanation of the new 911's design and internal structure, so let us introduce some of the details.
New 911 (992)
Rear design
This was my first time seeing the actual car, and my first impression was
Totally cooler than the picture!
That is my impression.
The photos on the Internet gave me the impression that it was a little bloated, a bit like a metabolic 911 (laugh), but when I saw it in person, I realized that was not the case.
The rear area is nicely organized and from a person's eye level.The surface from the roof to the rear glass/C-pillar and rear wing is nearly flat, which gives the entire car the appearance of being low and poised.I imagined a more rounded and voluptuous back area, but that's not the case at all.
On the other hand, when you squat down and look at the rear, the rear fender overhang is large.911's "big butt" is alive and well.The design is instantly recognizable as a 911 from a following car, and from the driver's perspective, the bulge of the rear fender can be seen in the side mirror. Yes, this view is a 911.
The most distinctive feature of the new 992 is the rear taillight strip connected in a single letter. It is said to have been inspired by the rear garnish of the 964 and 930 of yesteryear, but it is composed of LEDs andLights on with exactly the same brightness from edge to edge.He said.
Alex said that it was difficult to find a supplier that could light such a large object from one end to the other with exactly the same brightness.Only one supplier was able to achieve this and adopted the technology there.He told us the story behind the project.
The rear spoiler has a larger area than its predecessor and rises at 90 km/h and changes to a more angled performance position at speeds above 150 km/h. The front cooling air flap opens and closes without permission depending on temperature, load, and speed. In addition, the front cooling air flaps open and close on unauthorized levels depending on temperature, load, and speed to optimize fuel economy and aerodynamics at high speeds, and theAlso works with wet modeYes.
The high-mount stop lamps were also a challenge during development.
High mount stop lamps must be a single luminescent object by American standards.It seems to be. However, as you know, this lamp, which is designed to look like an audio pause button (stop button), does not glow in the middle. If it does, they say it does not meet the criteria.
He said that the U.S. inspection is judged mechanically by a camera, and that reflectors (reflectors) that passed the inspection and appeared to be well spaced were selected and placed through a trial-and-error process.
front
I looked at the front desk.It feels somewhat like an air-cooled 911.According to Alex, the shape of the hood was designed with the air-cooled era, such as the 964, in mind, so it is less rounded and a little more angular.
The traditional 911 front fender bulge, sometimes likened to a woman's leg, is still present in the 992. However, as Alex explains, this is also the case here.The peak (summit) of the fender is slightly flattened and is not a simple circle, he said.And then...Its flatness extends to the headlights.The company says, "We are very pleased with the new headlights. As a result, the shape of the headlights is not a simple oval as before, but a slightly atypical shape, he said.
The vehicle in this exhibit is the optional "LED Matrix HeadlightsThe car is equipped with the "Porsche logo". The Porsche logo can be seen inside the lights, which is very cool, just like the Panamera. When the lights are turned on, the light reflects off the lines inside the lights, creating a beautiful line of light.
It is a little hard to see in the picture, but there is a wet mode sensor placed in the front fender, and Alex explains that it detects rain close to the tires, not on the windshield raindrop sensor as in previous cars, so it can deal with wet road surfaces after a rain He says the system can also cope when the road surface is wet after a rainfall.
By the way.When rain is detected, the Wet Mode tells the driver that it is better to use the Wet Mode with an indicator, but the actual decision to use the Wet Mode is left to the driver.That's right. This kind of prioritization of the driver's will is very typical of Porsche.
interior
We were also allowed to sit in the interior to check the atmosphere. First of all, the interior scents that I personally value areIt has the same 911 scent as in the 991 era.This is difficult to describe, so I will omit it, but the scent of the 911 is a little different from that of the Boxster, and I like it indescribably.
The overall impression can be summed up in one word: a "mini Panamera. However, the overall taste is based on horizontal straight lines, which somehow gives the interior an air-cooled era feel.I personally like the slightly retro, yet easy-to-understand controls, especially the center switches.
The PCM screen is larger, and the menu layout and basic feel of the PCM operation follows that of the Panamera. Immediately after the delivery of the Panamera, I was a little confused at first, but now I do not feel any inconvenience.If you customize the HOME screen to your own specifications, there will be no particular inconvenience.
Does the Japanese version have GPF?
After Alex explained various aspects of both the exterior and interior, I asked him a question that had been on my mind.

The Japanese version does not come with it. So I think you will enjoy the good sound!" (Added on 2021.8.4: It seems that from the 2021 model, it will be included in the Japanese specifications as well. Just hearing this doubled my personal interest in the 992.
'What are the chances of a manual car coming into Japan when it comes out?'
In Japan, it will probably be difficult. This is because of fuel consumption regulations and the fact that PDK is more popular than MT in Japan. However, there is a possibility that a limited edition model will be available.
It was not stated what the limited edition vehicle refers to, but it may refer to a special vehicle such as the GT3.
Finally, I had a chance to capture the sound of the startup of the new 992. However, I only had my iPhone with me at the time, so I couldn't get a very high quality sound, but I hope you can get an idea of the atmosphere. (In reality, the sound is much more powerful.)
We also saw the 992 later in the demo run at Fuji Speedway with the GT3 and other cars. Of course, the GT3 was more bombastic, but I would add that the 992 also sounded very good.
