Porsche Owners File #17] Cayman GT4 Purchase, Options and Driving Review

Porsche Cayman

(4) Porsche's performance that you feel when you own one.

(1) Engine / Engine sound

It's a noisy car anyway, the noise of the NA flat 6 engine, the muffler, the mechanical noise of the drivetrain, and even the squeal of the brakes when stopping, are just noise to those around you, butUplifting sound for driversIt is.

It also makes me want to downshift for no reason with sport mode ON and sport exhaust ON.

The engine is torquey throughout the entire range and revs up without stagnation, but there is no mountain of torque that pops up at higher RPMs than about 7,000 rpm or so.

I think it's probably GT3 that has that ahead of it, so "I want to taste the special engine of GT3 at high rpm.I think "I think" is a good idea.

Nevertheless, the Cayman GT4 offers more than enough breathtaking acceleration. The GT4 has a relatively large displacement of 3.8L, so it has a lot of torque even at low speeds and can be driven in 6th gear even at 30 km/h.It is also not peaky, so it can be driven in first, third, and fifth gear in town. It is also not peaky, so it is possible to drive in first, third, and fifth gears in town without much trouble.

Also, in order to get it up to higher RPMs, the dealer told me that theNo problem with PDK, but the manual should not exceed 7000 rpm.I was warned that I had to consciously relax the force I put on my right foot. Apparently, if you hit the rev limit, you will be on the history of 5 levels and will not be able to get a dealer warranty.

Comparing the manual version of the basic grade 981 Boxster with the GT4, the 981 Boxster is also fast enough to be a sports car, although the smaller displacement makes it less powerful. I found it rather nimble and desirable.

Porsche has made it a point to give each grade its own special features.And.

Then I compared the 718 I rented as a loaner to the 981.Even in the same basic grade, the 718 is by far faster and even more nimble.I felt it. However, the engine sound was just like a Subaru flat-4 engine from the era of equal-length unequal explosions, which made me think of a Subaru, not a Porsche.

For those who don't know the Subaru engines of the time, it's a nice engine sound that characterizes the flat 4 engine.

(2) Ride Comfort / Ride Quality

As for the ride, it's on the stiff side.Unthinkably supple for a sports car of a generation agoI think it is fine. And maybe I am insensitive, but I can't feel the difference between PASM (on/off).

The GT4 has a lower ride height and a special lip spoiler on the front. There is no lifter setting, so the front rubs a lot.

On ordinary roadways and railroad crossings, you will not scrape even if you are not conscious of it. Even when entering a convenience store or gas station on a steep incline, if you are conscious of entering at an angle, you will almost never scrape.

Also, narrow self-propelled multi-level parking lots are more likely to scrape where it is hard to enter at an angle.

However, if it were to scrape, it would not be noticeable and would not cause fatal damage at the bottom of the spoiler. And I know it's common sense for this kind of car, but stopping at a wheel stop is strictly forbidden. It is.

Also, as for foresight, when I first drove the 911 (997), it was a sports car with a "Good all-round visibility, not only forward, but also diagonally backward and rearward.I was impressed by this. I was impressed by the fact that "even women can feel safe riding in this way.

However, as for the Cayman, it is difficult to see diagonally backwards, although not fatally so. Personally, I prefer the Cayman in a position where the seating position feels low and enveloping.

(iii) Brake

You don't feel it that much in town, but if you step on the brake hard while driving on the highway, it slows down to the point where you think you might be rear-ended. Also, the feel of it.the more you step on it, the more it worksI have a feeling.

4) MT Transmission

The clutch is relatively heavy, but not so heavy as to be painful. Also, when starting, I like the unique feeling of a net connection. As mentioned in a previous article, Porsche riders are notDo not step on the gas pedal when starting offI am nervous that I might stall the engine when I drive with the "I'm aware of it". I have not been able to do this unconsciously yet.

I also don't think the "shift feel is superb", although I have never felt that shifting is reluctant, or that the pattern is ambiguous, or that shifting is difficult.

Unlike other grades, GT4 has a short shiftbut not enough to allow shifting gears with a return of the wrist, andBecause it is mid-ship, it does not have the same directness as RWD.I feel. I remember that the Cappuccino I used to drive could be operated in a smaller way.(It's not even a good comparison.)

5) Running

As you drive down the mountain road, you'll seeIt feels good to turn a corner as if you were on the central axis of the coma.It is so. Where other cars used to brake before a corner, it turns effortlessly without braking. I think the limit is very high.

When the accelerator pedal is roughly depressed with the steering wheel turned and the rear wheel feels cheating for a moment, it regains its posture, probably because the PSM is applying control.

The control is not excessive, and the intervention is respectful of the driver's intentions, so there is no sense of unnaturalness or uneasiness.
I don't have the skill or experience to drive the GT4 perfectly, but I can tell you that "I guess the design philosophy must be in a very high place.I feel that the "I'm not a good person.

(6) Fuel consumption

Highway: around 10km/L, flowing country road: 11km/h City: 7-8km/L.

(7) Maintenance

Soon after owningIt's been 2 years, one inspection and one oil change. The first time we did this, we were able to do it for free. This was a service, so it was free.
The cost is unknown for the first inspection soon, but I have never had a single problem with it and it doesn't feel like it will break down, so in the long run it will be as safe to drive as a Japanese car.

Just looking at the information on the net, it seems that there is a service campaign (recall) on the GT4 MT. I haven't actually been notified, but I am a little concerned.

(5) Points of concern

I am not used to applying the parking brake and sometimes forget to do so. I wish there was a handbrake or a foot pedal type, or at least a switch placed around the center console.

(6) Options you would like to have if you buy a Porsche in the future

Not an option.Manual (MT), right-hand driveI am a sports car driver. Nowadays, AT is by far faster and the seamless shifting of the PDK is appealing, but I cannot enjoy a sports car unless I use a manual transmission because I want to feel the sensation of steering the car myself. I am just an old-fashioned person (laugh).

I don't find the pedal layout of the 981 to be a problem. The other many options are very satisfying, but I think you can still feel the Porsche without them.

7) What is Porsche to you?

It is a car to refresh and experience the extraordinary, as if you are going on a trip abroad.

〘Blog manager's opinion〙
I was actually shown this GT4 at the Ashiu Driveway observatory, and it was very beautiful and cool. from 981 to 718, I think there are many aspects that have evolved, but I also felt that there are many good points that only the 981 can offer. I would love to drive one someday too! Thank you very much, Akki!

  1. Akki's nephew

I'm a big fan of this blog. I'm Akki's nephew.
Thank you for making this an absurdly great article!
This is a wonderful article in Mina's hands. The whole family is already very impressed!!!! We are all very impressed. Sorry it took so long. Akki will try to get me to buy the next 718 Spyder.

Akki's brother bought a white 997 and bragged about it to his friends, and then there were two other white 997 riders around Akki, making a trio of white 997s with the exact same look.
I'll also send you a picture of the white 997 Carrera trio all together! LOL!

The infectivity of the Porsche bacteria, it's tremendous (laughs).
I would like to drive a 997 once. Many people say it is very good.
We are looking forward to seeing your photos (smile).

Thank you for your continued support!

The 981 GT4 is one of the cars I would like to drive at least once, so I was very interested to see it.

    Among them.
    > The Cayman GT4 offers more than enough breathtaking acceleration, and the GT4's relatively large displacement at 3.8 liters means that the
    > Torque is very strong even at low speeds, and it can go into 6th gear even at 30 km/h. It is not peaky, so it is possible to drive in 1st, 3rd, and 5th gear in town. Also, since it is not peaky, it is possible to drive in 1st, 3rd, and 5th gears in town.

I was surprised to see that the GT4 has a lower gear ratio than the Cayman S.
I have checked that the 718 is the same as the 981 Cayman S for both Cayman and Cayman S.
In the 718 Cayman, 6th gear will bring the engine below idle rpm at about 36 km/h, so the engine seems to suffer there even during deceleration.

Flying shifts may be a privilege of MT.
In my case, on my 718 Cayman, I used to do 1st gear full acceleration -> 2nd gear -> 6th gear. But

    > "PDK is fine, but manuals should not exceed 7000 rpm," I was warned.
    > Consciously relax the force applied to the right leg.
    > Apparently, if you hit a rev limit, it will stay in your history at 5 levels and you won't get dealer warranty.

This was the first time I had heard of this. The tachometer is in the red zone from 7400 rpm, but I don't think I have ever hit the limit on the 718 Cayman, even when I shift up to the very limit during acceleration. I was not told anything about it when I had it serviced. I am sure there is some leeway before hitting the limiter. Of course, it would be very difficult to hit the limiter on a downshift. But I don't think it is necessary to look at 400 rpm margin, though.

I have never experienced a Cayman MT, but I wonder if the GT4 and Cayman are still totally different!
