Porsche Owners File #23: What I learned from owning a 718 Cayman.

Porsche Cayman (718)
Porsche Cayman

This project was born out of our readers' desire to know the real voices of Porsche owners who actually own a Porsche.Porsche Owner's File".The 23rd report is by TD on the 718 CaymanIt is.

〘Owner Information〙
I'd like to introduce you to my car: 718 Cayman (2018, base grade)
Pen name: TD
Area of residence: Kanto region
Family composition: Family of 4
Past car history: Mitsubishi Pajero, Nissan Pathfinder, Toyota Camry, Golf Variant (7.5)
A word to our readers.
I didn't have a yearning for a Porsche, I bought it on a spur of the moment idea. I hope that by telling you how it really is, I can be of some help to those who are considering a Porsche.

(1) Background leading to purchase

Why did you choose Porsche?

I used to drive a Golf Valiant.I love German cars.I thought, "I've never been in a Porsche. I had been given rides in Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and BMW, but I had never driven a Porsche, so I was interested.

Why did you choose the 718 Cayman out of all the Porsches?

The budget part is a big part of it."If I'm going to go to all this trouble, I'd like a car that looks like a sports car.I thought, "I'll take it. I was torn between the previous model NA6, but I prioritized an older model as much as possible, and I wanted the body color to be Miami Blue.

What were the deciding factors in your purchase?

It was the color I wanted to ride in (Miami Blue) andI'm concerned about the deterioration of the hood since it's an outside parking lot. Therefore, we decided to go with a Cayman instead of a Boxster.

(2) Options/Specifications

Options, Specifications

20-inch Carrera S wheels, sport chrono, and LED headlights are the main options. Other features include GT steering wheel, heated seats, and electric side mirrors.

Reasons for choosing this option and specification

I bought it used, but at the time I was considering buying it, the Miami Blue color was no longer available in new cars, so I chose the color first. I also liked the fact that the wheel color was black, which was cool.

(3) Process of vehicle delivery

Flow from order to delivery, period, etc.

Started looking for a car at the end of the year, decided in March, and delivered in mid-April.I decided to buy a car from a dealer. Since the dealership was far away, I decided by mail and phone without checking the actual car.
Initially, I looked for a certified pre-owned car, but I could not find a Cayman with the Miami Blue body color, so I bought it from a general dealer.

I had some concerns about the fact that it was not a certified pre-owned car, but I decided on the basis of the word-of-mouth about the store, the reputation that Porsche cars rarely break down because they are relatively new, and the Porsche Center maintenance record.

(4) Porsche's performance that you feel when you own one.

(1) Engine / Engine sound

The sound when the engine is started is very exciting. The sound when shifting up and down in Sports Plus is also like that of a sports car, and the bass sound is quite resonant, so I am careful when driving in residential areas at night. The power is also sufficient for normal driving.

(2) PDK evaluation, etc.

The transmission is PDK, but it rides like a normal car. It does not falter when shifting gears.

(3) Ride comfort, glide taste

To be honest, the ride isn't great.I think. The Golf is quieter, handles lighter, and is more comfortable. However, it is not unbearable, and it is an addictive ride that makes you want to drive it as soon as possible.

On the contrary, nowadays, a car that is too quiet is not enough.

It is also more stable above 100 km/h. I have never driven an 18" standard so I have no comparison, but I think the 20" wheels have a big impact.

Handling / Braking

The steering wheel feels reasonably heavy and turns as much as you turn the wheel. If you drive the Golf after driving the Cayman, you will feel uneasy because it is too light.
Brakes work well and also squeal well. However, I am not concerned about the squealing of the brakes because I knew in advance that that is the way it is.

And if you step on the brake pedal, it stops as hard as you step on it, which again, if you drive a Golf after a Cayman, it will feel too light and uncomfortable. But just so there is no misunderstanding, the Golf is a very good car too! It runs well, is very rigid, and is safe.

(5) Fuel Economy / Maintenance / Repair

9-10km/liter in city driving, 12-14km/liter in long distance on highway(meter display), so in normal mode, the fuel economy is surprisingly good. However, when I put it in Sport or Sport Plus mode, gasoline is decreasing rapidly (laughs).

Regarding the car inspection, there was almost no time left until the next inspection, and the car was inspected immediately after delivery (tears).I asked the Porsche Center for help, but the cost was about 150,000It was. In addition to that, I got an extended warranty for an additional 100,000 yen.

The car has no defects and is in good condition. I think it is not so much that "maintenance, etc. will cost a million yen" because tires are surprisingly inexpensive if you look for certified tires on the Internet.

However, parts are more expensive than domestic cars, so I think it will be expensive when parts replacement starts to appear.

(6) Reaction of family and surroundings

People tell me that Miami blue is more beautiful in person than it is in pictures. Also, they get excited. Also, when I tell people around me that I bought a Porsche, they say, "Seriously! Why?" (laugh).

(7) Favorite point

I like the overall form of the car because it is beautiful. I also love the excitement of driving it.

(5) Options you would definitely want to add (or have added) if you were to purchase a Porsche in the future.

The Sport Chrono Package is more enjoyable if it is attached.
I would like to add PASM since the wheels are optional and larger (road noise is very loud).
If budget allows, I would like to be particular about the interior design.

(6) Areas of concern

I feel the performance of the idling stop is not good.Engine stop before coming to a stop as it decelerates.Good heavens!(The blogger also experienced this when he owned a 970 Panamera)The car stalled once without restarting. Idle stop is always off.

Also, as I was driving it, I was still interested in a 911. I would like to ride in the open, so next I would like to ride in a 911 Cabriolet. I don't know when that will be....

(7) General comments

Although contradictory, "Something you don't need, but glad you bought it.It's "I want to drive! Even on troublesome errands, "I want to drive, so let's go!" It makes me feel like "I want to drive!

So, if you are interested in a Porsche, we recommend that you buy one anyway. Even if you decide that it is not what you expected, you can sell it. I recommend that you buy the model, color, and options you want when you want them.

8) What is Porsche to you?

My car that I want to drive Porsche again next time.It is. I have never been very particular about cars, but I have started to fantasize, "If I buy a car next time, I will buy this model with this option...".

Hi Mina, nice to meet you TD.
I used to drive a 718 Cayman (MT), so I read this with nostalgia.

As for the idling stop, my observation on the MT is that it is designed to stop at 7 km/h or less when the clutch is released in neutral. This is exactly the same in my current 991.2 911 Carrera, and I wouldn't be surprised if the PDK also has an auto-stop function if you step on the brake and put the car in neutral below a certain speed, but I don't know.

As for the brake squeal, I thought my car squealed a lot at first, but it did not squeal under hard braking, so I tried hard braking a few times and it did not squeal after that. I would be interested to know if there is any change in other units, so if you don't mind, I would appreciate it if you could give it a try.

      Thank you!
Thanks again for all your enlightening comments!

      >I thought my brakes squealed a lot at first, but when I braked hard, they didn't squeal, so I braked hard a few times and they stopped squealing.
      So that's how it happens!
      I see...!
