Porsche Boxster Type 986

I have a 981 Boxster GTS that I really love, though,This time, we had the opportunity to test drive its ancestor, the first generation 986 Boxster.

The body color is silver, believed to be Arctic Silver. And the interior is an orange-red color called terracotta leather. The color is reminiscent of the Carrera GT and is really cool. Both the exterior and interior are in very clean condition, and the mileage is only about 40,000 km.It is a 2001 Boxster S, an exquisite car with a 6-speed manual transmission.

At the time, when the 986 Boxster was introduced, "It's round and not like a Porsche.I had an image of it as a "new design," but when I look at it now, I see a wonderful fusion of old and new design, which I find very cool. In particular, the headlights, which were derided as teary-eyed, are a wonderful design that, when seen through modern eyes, is both classic and new at the same time.

The 996 911 is no exception, but the design that seemed strange at the time is now seen as uniquely appealing. Porsche's design was ahead of its time.

This was my first test drive of the 986 Boxster, and although I have driven the 981 and 718 Boxsters many times, I was excited to get into the driver's seat to see what this originator car was all about.

Sitting on the seat, the soft seat, typical of Porsche of this era, envelops the body.It seems to be fatigue-free even on long-distance drives.The seat's hold is not as good as the current model, but it still provides adequate support for the body.

The sound of the engine starting is much quieter than today's Porsches.Nevertheless, the pleasant sound characteristic of the flat-six engine is still present. The clutch is heavy compared to today's cars, but not so heavy as to be stressful.The shift feel is also moderately heavy and rigid, which is the feel of a manual.

Put the car in first gear and open the throttle. The clutch meets smoothly and starts smoothly. As the accelerator pedal is opened, the rpm rises smoothly. The amount of pressure on the accelerator pedal and the response of the engine are in direct proportion to each other.

Running that exudes an analog feel.

Once out on the road, there is no sense of a lack of power, as the car squeezes out 252 hp and runs through the winding roads at full throttle. This is the result of the chassis's excellent performance, which does not rely on electronic control.

When the steering wheel is turned, the car turns around with moderate roll. While the car has the natural turning performance of a midship, the roll stops at a certain point, and the car exits the corner without a sense of uneasiness.

It has a good degree of softness, as if an athlete were de-energized, and yet it handles crisply.Even the 981 GTS feels stiff compared to the 986.To be honest, when you drive a 981 GTS from a 986, you even feel as if you are driving a GT3. The suppleness of the 986 is that special.

The steering wheel directly conveys information about the road surface. The grip limit is easy to understand and there is a strong sense of oneness with the car.The driver can shift the load by accelerating the gas pedal at will.This is the kind of driving feel that can only be achieved with analog systems, where the driver and the car become one and the same.

And the engine sound is quiet but produces a pleasant "cone" sound in the middle. It is not an explosive sound, but the sound quality is very good. There is no electronic production as in recent Porsches, and the original sound of the engine is directly transmitted.

After 4000 rpm, the engine's nice voice is heard. When the engine is cranked up to the red zone, the volume rises a bit more, but it is not noisy. It is rather pleasant and motivates the driver to drive.

Braking is also perfect. When the brakes are applied, the speed of the car drops firmly by the same amount. The car's behavior under braking is stable and does not cause the driver any anxiety.

This is the real Porsche.

The 986 Boxster was one of those cars that made you want to say, "This is the one.

The chassis has a strong analog feel with little electronic control, and the six-cylinder engine has a pleasant sound. And the pleasure of manual shifting. It is not that we want to drive the 986 Boxster along the Venus Line in Nagano, Japan, but we want to keep driving slowly, feeling the vibration of the engine. The 986 Boxster had that kind of appeal.
