Test drive Porsche 911 SC (air-cooled 930 model)|A 911 is always a 911.

Air-cooled Porsche 911SC
Reviews & Test Rides

The other day, my husband was given the opportunity to drive a 911SC by a friend of yours, and he wrote an article about his impressions. Please take a look if you would like to read it.

911SC (930 type), test drive

This time, I had the opportunity to test drive a 1981 Porsche 911 SC.SC in 911 SC stands for Super CarreraIt was, as was typical of the 911, powered by a 3-liter air-cooled flat-six. It boasted output of 204 PS at 5900 rpm and 27 mkg at 4300 rpm. It replaced the previous 911 2.7 and Carrera 3.0, and was characterized by a slightly wider body than the Carrera.

Unpacking the material at hand, we find that0-100 km/h in 6.3 seconds and top speed of 226.6 km/h in the 78 SC (180 PS )So, with this '81 model, it would probably be about 6 seconds. This is quite fast.

Even by today's standards, the 6-second mark is far beyond the capability of an ordinary family car. It is a speed that can only be achieved by a sports car of a certain caliber.

The transmission is the so-called Porsche Synchro 915 type.It has been described as feeling like "cutting butter with a hot knife. It is a transmission that still has many enthusiasts.

I literally throw the gnarly feeling shift into first gear and connect the clutch. This feeling of the clutch being connected is very similar to that of all the old and new Porsches I have driven. I lightly engage the clutch while the car is almost idling, and as soon as it starts moving, I depress the accelerator pedal. It's not that difficult because it's an older car, and if you're used to the clutch on a Porsche, it's easy to start smoothly.I think.

Starts running and is very soft between initial rolls. It is so soft that it is hard to believe it is a sports car. 2nd and 3rd gears are thrown in and the car accelerates. The power feel is perfect. The car is not at all slow because it is an old car, but rather, it is a car that runs well. The car's speed changes in proportion to the amount of pressure on the accelerator pedal, which is typical of Porsche.

The steering is heavy, but I personally feel no discomfort, especially once I start driving. This is more like a 911 and gives the driver a strong sense of driving a sports car.

Ashi'sHoden S-CurveWhen I turned the steering wheel to the right and left in the "I" position, the roll was more forgiving than I expected. The feeling of the suspension is similar to that of the car's transmission, which has a core in its gnarliness, and while it is soft, it feels as if it will stop at a certain point, never making you feel uneasy or scared.

Compared to the 964 model I have, it is still the same. The lightness and lightness is felt more this way, and 964 is a little heavier.does. On the other hand, theThe point that I initially thought there was not so much difference than I had imagined was the maneuverability of being RR.It is. I had expected it to be more difficult than the 964 because of the different generation, but the 911SC did not show any special nervousness when driving through the winding roads in a normal flow.

This may be due to the fact that I am used to the 911 to some extent, but even if I was not so conscious of the front load, the car would turn and there was nothing dangerous about it. Of course, at higher speeds, it would be a different story, so please take this as just a story about driving comfortably on ordinary roads.

The engine sound is still very pleasant, the raw engine sound of this era.All the mechanical moving parts are audible, and the sound of the engine in multiple tones. It is. I was driving a 992 that had just been delivered to me that day, and the sound of the 992's engine was similar to that of an air-cooled engine.

So I listened to them again and compared them.I thought again that the 992 seemed to have removed only the tedious part of this air-cooled engine sound.

I throw a shift from 4th to 5th gear, but the engine rpm is quite high. I vaguely remember that the gear ratio was such that the engine would probably reach 4000 rpm before 100 km/h.

At first I thought maybe I had not put it in 5th gear, so I checked again and again, but it was still 5th gear. I later checked with the owner. That's about it.He replied, "I'm not sure. So, he said that the car is quite agile when driving on the highway. If it can maintain such a high RPM, I am sure it will be a lot of fun.

When I eased off the accelerator pedal and turned with an awareness of how to increase the ground contact of the front tires by leaving light braking, it was still the movement of a 911.The feeling of turning around the rear of the car is pleasant. The great thing about the 911 is that the basics are really consistent no matter which era you drive.

The current 991 and 992 are criticized for being too easy, but on the other hand, if you drive in a way that is appropriate for RR, they will respond to your needs. The depth of the response is the same whether it is the latest model or an air-cooled model.

911 that can be used as a family car.

Now that you have a reasonable understanding of the carIt is very comfortable to drive at a constant speed with the gears fixed around 3rd or 4th gear.I think it would be great to drive this car along Route 55 in Shikoku, and I think the 911SC would be well suited for that kind of driving.

By the way, when I asked the owner, he told me that this car is used as a family car, and he uses it everyday with his wife and children in it.It's totally usable. He said, "I am a very good person. He said it is reliable and can go anywhere. This is truly a wonderful use of the 911.

According to Porsche

No other sports car can take you shopping after a race at the Nürburgring. No other sports car can take you shopping after a race at the Nürburgring, even if the number of passengers is different. A sports car for everyday pleasure."

although

I would like to applaud the owner for using the 911 as a truly versatile sports car. Thank you, owners, for allowing us to experience your precious car!
