Test drive the new 718 Spyder. What is the sound you are interested in? How is the ride? How is the handling?

Test drive the new 718 Spyder
It has been a while since the 718 Spyder went on sale, and we have been seeing it around town for a while now. This time, we finally had the opportunity to test drive one.
The 718 Spyder we had the pleasure of test driving this time.Crayon body color with red top and Spider Classic interior package. This is a truly ironclad specification. Personally, I want this design alone. It is really simply cool. Personally, this is my favorite design among the current Porsches.
This time the individual isRight-hand drive model with 6MT, GPF (gasoline particulate filter) is included. It seems to be a specification.
I started the engine and started driving.
The starting sound of the engine is powerful in its own way. The NA 4-liter engine wakes up with a howl of "BOOM! The NA 4-liter engine wakes up with a howl. The sound quality of the idling is very similar to that of the 992.The engine block and other parts seem to be the same, and it seems that the turbo was removed from the 992 engine and the displacement was enlarged to make this engine.
This engine, which produces 420 PS, has the same displacement. The characteristics are as different from the GT3 engine.
It has a very thick torque even in the practical range, and a trapezoidal torque curve that produces 420 Nm of maximum torque at 5,000 to 6,800 rpm in the case of the manual version. (The PDK version has a maximum torque of 430 Nm at 5,500 rpm.)
Therefore, the car is very easy to drive, from starting off to picking up speed.GTS 4.0 Test DriveBut this engine is written to be very easy to drive, and there is nothing at all peaky or unwieldy about its characteristics, just because it is a Spyder.
It really is an engine characteristic that can be practically used on a daily basis.
The feeling of the shift is
Combined with its practical torque characteristic engine, the shift feeling is also excellent. The short-stroke shifter, the same as in the GT3 and GT4, smoothly and smoothly shifts with a flick of the wrist. There is no reluctance at all, and no need to worry that some steps are difficult to enter.
You can choose the desired tier perfectly and stress-free at any time.
This is the same impression I had with the GTS 4.0, and I don't feel like it will stall.Once the clutch is connected and the car starts moving, the driver only needs to apply a slight force to the right foot and the car will smoothly pick up speed.
I later drove my own 981 Boxster GTS to compare, and the ease of starting is completely different: in the 981, after connecting the clutch and starting, it feels like you have to consciously step on the gas pedal, whereas in the 981, after connecting the clutch and starting, it feels like you have to consciously step on the gas pedal. The 718 Spyder and the GTS4.0, for example, give the driver the feeling of being able to drive faster and faster without being so conscious of the accelerator pedal. It is.
Also, when shifting from first to second gear, there is no shifting shock even if the driver is not conscious of gas pedal work. With the 981, this can be done by slightly stepping on the accelerator pedal to shift into 2nd gear without any shocks.
Dense torque and smarter engine control help the driver. The first is the "I" in "I".
I have experienced many manual cars, both domestic and imported, and I think the 718 Spyder and GTS4.0 manuals are among the easiest for beginners to get to grips with, so even those who are not confident with manuals should not worry.
It takes practice, but I think this will be a relatively quick and easy ride.
What is the engine noise that you are interested in?
Now, let's see.If you are concerned about sound, this is the place to be.Yes. I agree. In many cases, reviews on the Internet have not really touched on this point, and I am sure many people would have liked to know the truth.
First, let me conclude.Quite quiet when it starts running. The Spyder is a "one and only" car. When the engine is started, there is a brave sound, but once the clutch is connected and the car starts to run, the Spyder is silent as if it is lying.
What? What's wrong?" The volume became so mild that for a moment I thought, "What's going on?Shifting up through second, third, and fourth gear at a little over 2000 rpm, it is as quiet and loud as a normal sports coupe.
In the case of the Spyder, there's no engine sport or sport plus mode like in the GT3 and other models. The default is a car like the Sport Plus mode.
Therefore, there is no particular mode of change.
On the other hand, when the driver shifts down a gear or two and accelerates, the Spyder's exhaust note changes drastically.
The exhaust and engine sound at that time is very wonderful.
It sounds a lot like a 992, but perhaps because of the larger displacement. It's a little low and bass heavy.Unlike the 4-cylinder model of the 718, it does not have a heartbeat similar to the V8 in the 4-cylinder model, but has the grainy sound of a 6-cylinder. In addition, the bubbling sound is quite minimal and almost non-existent when the gas pedal is turned off.
It is difficult to describe the sound quality in words, so please check Youtube, etc., but here is a list of recent Porsches that I know of, in order of lowest to highest sound quality.
718 (4-cylinder models) > 718 Spyder & GTS4.0 > 992 > 991GT3 low rpm > 981 > 991GT3 high rpm
As for sound, both volume and sound quality are not something to be discussed in terms of good or bad, as each individual has quite different personal preferences. It is only to be used as a reference for choosing a Porsche with the sound quality you prefer.
Incidentally, the car is actually owned by.A valve controller that can be opened and closed by remote control was installed on the muffler. So, we also tried it with the valve open.
Then, it is totally different.Even from low speeds, a sports car-like exhaust note can be heard from the rear, which is really pleasant.I was again impressed by how pleasant it is to have the sound in proportion to the accelerator pedal.
However, it is never too noisy, and there is no difficulty in conversing with passengers, nor is there any discomfort that clutters the interior.
It's comfortable even if you don't fly at all, and as I thought with the GT3, if the valve is closed at low rpm, you try to run above 4000 rpm somehow, which is bad for the global environment, and also dangerous at times because of the speed, butIt would be gentler to drive with a valve controller. This is a very ironic result.
As a side note, the owner has tried a unit without a GPF (an early imported unit, with a different part number to be exact. The owner has tried a car without GPF (an early imported car, with a different part number to be exact).
According to him, the sound was even clearer and the volume was totally different.
With GPF, the sound is inevitably muffled.Yes.

I am also waiting for 718 Spyder LHD-PDK, but it seems that the optional summer tires can be selected in the config, but not in the PC side system at the ordering stage due to an error.
In fact, my one was not selectable. I too think this is a must-have option, considering that it usually runs in the rain, but I'm sad that I couldn't choose it. But I'm more worried about whether it will actually make it to production! I think I will wait a little longer.

I see! There are so many things you don't know until you actually place the order...
> However, I'm more worried if I'm really going to get into production! I will wait a little longer.
Yes, and if you don't mind, I would be glad to know if you know the situation.
Mr. Hiro
Thank you for your time the other day.
I read your test drive article on the 718 Spyder.
I was convinced again, when I first purchased it.
I had a more radical and spartan image because it was the latest Spyder, but I was strangely unconvinced!
(I'm happy with the specs and the ride) when I compared it to the 981.
I thought I wanted this feeling.
But the 718 Spyder is also fun to drive winding
The place where you don't feel tired at all even on a long touring.
It's quintessential.
I wanted to run more and get used to it.
Thank you for this valuable experience!
Mr. Kawamoto.
Thank you very much for the help you have given my husband.
I have heard from my husband since then.
I am sure I will be of much help to you again in Ashiu, and I look forward to working with you again!
I was looking forward to your article on the Spyder!
I am also in the process of ordering a 718 Spyder RHD-PDK. Like your bio, the optional summer tires were not available at the ordering stage.
It's a shame, because I personally wanted to enjoy winding and rainy days rather than the circuit...
Nevertheless, I could not find such an accurate and unmatched impression anywhere on the Internet, and it was very helpful.
Even though it is inevitable with the times, cars that can be expected to have barking sound quality will probably be eliminated in the future.
Be that as it may, it would be helpful if you could someday compare it with the 981 generation Spyder and GT4 and give some impressions. m(_ _)m
Yoshikichi.
> Like Bio, optional summer tires were no longer available at the ordering stage.
Oh, I see! I knew it...
The environment surrounding cars is changing in many ways, and I am sure that the options are also changing.
I'm sure a lot will change in the future between the time the new car goes on sale and after...
> Anyway, it would be great if you could someday compare it with the 981 generation spider and GT4 and make an impression. M (_ _) m
Thank you!
Yes, I will tell my husband again ^^^.
Good morning, mina and hiro!
As was the case with the previous 981 Boxster GTS, I was very happy and looking forward to getting impressions of my own car!
When I first took delivery of the car, I regretted it because the manual top was a hassle, I was tired of the manual transmission after a long time, and the sound was not as good as that of the 981.
Hiro also complimented me on how cool I looked, which got me really excited!
The negatives, manual tops, manuals, are not even an issue now, and I'm glad we went with manuals! I'm even happy with it here. And as for the sound, I put in a PSE controller and that solved it!
I would definitely recommend putting this on! I will make love to you
Anyway, now I can go out for a while in the area, or go on a long tour, both of which are great fun!
Oh, and by the way... I'd love to have you, Mina, who drives a manual, drive one and give me your impressions! I'll be looking forward to it! ^ ^
Looking forward to your continued blogging!
Mr. taramangts.
Thank you for everything!
And thank you so much for giving my husband a ride in your precious car the other day.
Those crayon spiders are really freaking cool!
If you were driving around town, you would surely say, "Oh! There's a really cool car driving around! I thought as I looked at the photos.
> Ah, that's right ... I would like Mina, who can ride the manual, to ride it once and make an impression! At that time, thank you! ^ ^
Wow, really! Thank you!
I have never driven a Spyder, so I would be very happy if you could take me for a ride once you have the chance ^^.
Please keep 'em coming!
Hi Mina.
The other day I heard for the first time the sound of the engine of a 718 Spyder with GPF.
Anyway, it had a caged sound and was quieter than the engine without GPF at low rpm.
Even with the case attached, the sound was a bit caged, so I wondered if it would be so different with the contents inside.
I felt the difference even more so since the spider I know without GPF is also retrofitted with the valve left open.
The grace period is only a few years away, but if the sound is so different with GPF, I feel that I was lucky with the timing of my purchase.

Hello.
>The other day I heard for the first time the sound of the engine of a 718 Spyder with GPF.
I knew it was totally different! It really depends on when you buy it.
It's something we can't do anything about over here...
Even if you buy used, I guess you have to check if it has GPF or not to buy it properly.
Good evening, Mina-san, Hiro-san.
Regarding 981 or 718, which I consulted the other day,
I signed the contract for 718 Cayman gts 4.0 today.
I tried the test drive again, and the handling and exhaust sound of the 981 Spider was really good ~, I was indulged in my thoughts (laugh)
It had an OP of about 4 million yen including PCCB, and it was an individual with favorable conditions that I could not easily meet, so I will wait patiently for a good MT individual with 981 gts, not just PDK now after I bought it for the time being. I came to a conclusion.
As you said, it is cyborg-like and lacks sensuality, but I am convinced that I can concentrate on running because I am Cayman.
By the way, does the owner who attached the valve controller to this 718 Spider know what the warranty on the PC was?
My person in charge overlooks what I added, but the guarantee is unprecedented, so ...
Was the answer.
While you can get a good sound, it is unacceptable for the new car warranty to disappear, so I am wondering whether to install it.
If you know it, I would appreciate it if you could teach me.
Thank you again for your continued support of Spider! !! !! (If you haven't worked on 981gts ...)
Congratulations on your contract!
Although it is a valve controller, many people around me basically say that it is not seen on a PC.
Therefore, it seems that most of them are maintained at an external maintenance shop.
Partly tied up with a wire instead of the valve controller,
There are some fierce people who remove it when they enter the dealer, so for your reference (laughs)
By the way, even with the valve controller attached, the sound quality is quite different depending on whether or not there is a GPF.
It seems that there is an opinion that a vehicle with GPF will inevitably have a caged sound, which is rather counterproductive.
Hiro, thank you for your reply!
After all there are many PCs that do not see ...
It is currently being confirmed, but since it is a demo car registered on 2020/9, I think that it is probably not attached in terms of timing. (It was a roaring sound that hurt my ears when I was puffed up)
Actually, in the Abarth 124 Spider I was riding before, the valve was fixed fully open with a wire (laugh)
After all, it's sad to think that you can't listen to the orchestra played by 981 with 718 if you stick to pureness no matter what you do ~
