Overnight trip of 700 km in Porsche 911 (air-cooled 964 model) [Part 2

touring journal

The other day.Overnight trip of 700 km in Porsche 911 (air-cooled 964)This is the second part of my husband's touring journal article called Please take a look.

Porsche 911 Touring Day2

It is one of the regular hotels in Kochi CityOvernight at Hotel Nikko Kochi Asahi Royal. The mechanical parking lot here is 1850mm wide, so a 964 or Boxster can be parked. Since it was too much trouble to go out for dinner, I ordered a bowl of bonito tataki on rice with room service.

This is quite excellent and delicious. I always order this when I stay here. It's a good portion, so I'm quite satisfied with just one order.

While confirming tomorrow's route, I stretch carefully and go to bed, as long hours in the 964 seat can cause back pain in my case.

The next morning, I slept a little too much and the clock read 8:30. I rush to get ready and look outside to find that unfortunately, it is cloudy. The weather forecast on my phone also said it was going to rain in the afternoon.

I quite like driving in the rain in an air-cooled 911.Originally, the self-proclaimed "Bad Weather Driving ManiaI like driving in the rain and snow, especially in a 911. Above all, the sound of the rain hitting the body and the frantically trying little windshield wipers create the atmosphere of traveling, and then the strong traction of the rear engine and the stability of the rear end is pleasant.

First, a light morning jog along the Yokonami Kuroshio Line.Today we will go for our favorite route, Route 194.As expected, there was no one on the Kuroshio Line in the rain. We parked our car at the parking lot of the Kurakosaki observatory and took a short rest. It is a special experience to sit in the air-cooled Pochet looking at the dark sky and the dark Pacific Ocean, lost in thought.

Leaving the parking lot, we headed north on Route 194 toward Saijo City. The road is wide and easy to drive. Although I occasionally run into the car in front of me, there is not much traffic, and I can continue at my own pace. On the way, we stopped at Michi no Sato (Roadside Station 633) for a late lunch. From this point on, Route 194 turns into a full-blown mountain winding road.

The Tiptronic is fixed in 3rd gear on the straightaway and shifts to 2nd gear just before a curve. The Tiptronic accelerates to 3rd gear and then back to 3rd gear, and the car rushes up the rainy Route 194. It was snowing when we came here before, and there was a thin layer of snow on the road near the pass, but it seemed to be fine this time.

Once over the vicinity of the pass, it is now the start of a very long downhill. The downhill 911 is fast. The front and rear weight balance has been optimized, making it easier to drive at a stretch. The rain intensified, and the water screen spit out by the tires reflected in the rearview mirror.

As I was driving along lightly, I suddenly noticed a black Honda Odyssey coming up behind me.

Perhaps they do not recognize us as a Porsche because we are such an old car, or perhaps they want to see a Porsche, but if we brake suddenly for any reason, they will surely rear-end us.Do not underestimate the importance of Porsche's brakes.(Sometimes people try to look at the back of a Porsche with a sticky on it, but you really shouldn't.)

In order to avoid danger, I picked up my pace a little and started to pull away, as there was no suitable place to do so. Since it was raining, we did not take it too hard either, but slowed down enough before the corner to carefully pull away. The Odyssey, which was following us well at first, gradually pulled away.

Even though it is old, it is still a 911.

The difference is still unmistakable when exiting a corner. The feeling of driving through a corner while feeling the rear traction in your hand is truly reassuring.

After enjoying 70 to 80 km of hill climbs and downhills, the tour will head to Saijo City. From there, the city of Sakaide takes the highway and 911 to the Goshikidai Skyline.I thought it was my first visit to the Goshikidai Skyline, but when I arrived, I found that I had been there once, about right after I took delivery of my Boxster. Since I drive on many different roads, my memory of the places I've been to these days is often fuzzy.

The Goshikidai Skyline is one of my favorite roads as it is relatively easy to drive around the summit, although the road surface is rough in some parts. I enjoyed the winding road with the Seto Inland Sea on my side, feeling nostalgic as I remembered the time when I came here in my Boxster.

This time, we did not have much time, so we headed home after this trip. From here, we took the highway all the way back to our home nonstop. There was no crosswind on the highway on the way home, and I enjoyed a comfortable cruise.Once again, I was surprised by the sense of security and stability at high speeds, which is hard to believe for a car that is almost 30 years old.

It is true that the front end of the car is a bit light, but the strange thing about this car is that somehow it does not make me feel uneasy. Perhaps it is because the car feels under my control, and I feel comfortable even on such a long high-speed trip. After all, the 911 is a car that grew up on the autobahn.

911 touring, finished

I parked the car in the garage, quietly turned the key and turned off the engine. The total distance traveled was 762.7 km, and we finished our two-day and one-night touring with a sense of gratitude that the car had run well and had not broken down this time.

Total distance traveled: 762.7 km
Average speed: 62 km/h
Average fuel consumption: 10.4 L/100 km (approx. 9.6 km/L)

  1. I am glad to meet you

After scrapping two 964s, my rainy drive in a 964 was a mess.
The first time in the Carrera 2, the rear of the car slipped on a straight on a rainy circuit, causing the car to lose control and crash hard into a concrete fence on the left side, wrecking the car.
The second time with the Carrera RS, while driving at about 120 in the passing lane on a rainy highway, the rear end suddenly slid out of control due to a change in wind pressure from the truck while passing a group of large trucks in a row in the left travel lane, and struck the left side fence, bounced back and struck the right side fence, and was struck by the sedan following behind. The vehicle was rear-ended and stopped, but was totaled and wrecked.
In a flash, he nearly lost his life when a large truck was caught in his path.
I still think that even in a straight line, it is affected by small factors such as accelerator on/off and wind pressure, and once its behavior is disturbed, I am convinced that it is uncontrollable.
Of course, the fact that it was wet was even more significant.
Even though we are aware that the front end is floating, we underestimate its dangerous characteristics when driving comfortably.
Even on a wide and good surface like a circuit, it was very difficult to control the behavior of the rear of the car, and in the rain, the car easily spun around.
Many times I have been afraid to plunge in too far because the downhill of the pass is more rear-ended.
With the RS brakes and car weight, there was little tare at the end of long mountain roads, but the Carrera 2 brakes were tough.
I felt that by the time I got up the mountain and down the mountain, my braking performance was already less than half of what it should have been.
If you enter a downhill corner with strong braking, you will not be able to turn because you will not be able to stop. If you force the turn, the rear will come out easily and there is no doubt that it will spin violently, so you cannot turn.
More than once, I managed to make a turn in the oncoming lane while praying to God that no oncoming cars would come.
    Very dangerous car.
But if I ever drive a 911 again, I would choose a 964 with a more enjoyable mechanical feel than a new one.
    I want a 964RS. (I'm crushing a valuable one.)

      How do you do?

      Thank you for your comment!
      I see...!

So the 964 is a fun car, but at the same time it is a car that should not be distracted.
In a modern Porsche, you don't have to worry so much about it, but the car works just fine.
After all, RR was amazing back then...

      My husband also said, "I want to drive 964RS, but I don't think I can handle it..." ^^;
